The Lunar New Year is by far my favourite holiday season. It beats Christmas for the following reasons:
- Extra day of rest
- No pre-holiday stress
- Ang paos
- Chinese New Year goodies!
- Family gatherings
- Excuse to buy new stuff
This year was particularly good in terms of the first 5 things listed partly because I had completely forgotten about the necessary preparations such as the very basic “Buy new clothes”. Amidst the house moving and the sick puppy, it just didn’t occur to me. Fortunately, I had gone shopping a couple of months back and bought lots of stuff and still had one dress which I had never worn before. Can’t say the same about my shoes though.
I find Chinese New Year the true time to take stock of one’s life. Because it is at Chinese New Year that relatives hurl personal questions at you without a second thought. It is funny how one thinks that at Chinese New Year, just because one is related by blood and never mind that we only see one another once a year, we can all try to extract as much intimate details from one another as possible. So, one has to be prepared to respond to questions about all the major aspects of one’s life and come up with stock answers on marital status, children (or lack thereof) if one is safely married, and career. It is generally amusing to me. This year, I went on the offensive and interrogated those younger than me. Is it a sign of age? In any case, I was not of much interest this year because Sniffles was with me and people were more interested in talking to him than to me.
It was a great time though, and a good rest. Was really depressed about being back at work today and experienced the blues for the first time in my life.
